Imagine being on a cruise when a dispute over damage to another boat raises the possibility that your ship could be held in port. That is the situation I discuss in today’s cruise news video.

What happened in Rhodes?

Greek newspaper Dimokratiki reports that Scarlet Lady lost her mooring on September 30, 2026, and struck the catamaran King of Rhodes. The report describes the catamaran owner’s allegations; the circumstances remain under investigation.

In my video, I discuss reports of strong winds and rough seas around the incident. Exactly why the mooring lines failed is still a question for the investigation.

The request to hold the cruise ship

According to Dimokratiki, the owner sought precautionary seizure and a prohibition on departure, claiming at least €400,000 in damages. That is the claim discussed as roughly $448,000 in my video, rather than a court award.

The newspaper reports that insurer SKULD provided a guarantee letter, after which Scarlet Lady departed on October 1. It says the application remains pending, with a hearing scheduled for February 23, 2027.

A guarantee does not settle the dispute. The reported guarantee allowed the ship to leave. It does not establish fault or a final amount owed.

My take: the number gets your attention

I have spent a lot of time around boats, and when I looked at the damage photographs in my video, that dollar figure certainly caught my attention. But photographs alone cannot tell us the full repair bill. I would want to see the inspection and the evidence before deciding whether the amount is reasonable.

For passengers, the immediate question would be much simpler: are we leaving, and what happens to our cruise if we cannot? That is what makes this such an unusual story. A dispute involving a smaller vessel can suddenly become a concern for an entire ship full of people.

I am interested to see how the claim develops. For now, the reported departure and the unresolved dispute are two different parts of the story.

Your turn

What would you think if your ship faced a request like this?
